Jun. 4—NORTH MANKATO — The Caledonia and Southland softball teams each capped their memorable seasons with a high note on Thursday in North Mankato.
The Warriors finished off their first state tournament appearance with a 5-1 defeat of Rockford to capture the Class 2A consolation championship, while the Rebels — making their first state appearance since 1995 — beat Barnum 3-2 to bring home the Class 1A consolation title.
The Warriors (28-3) capitalized on three Rockford errors, resulting in three of their five runs being unearned.
Ashlyn Reinhart and Paizley Lange each had big days at the plate for Caledonia.
The freshman Reinhart drove in Lange for the first run of the game with an RBI single. It was the first of two runs scored for Lange, who would score on a passed ball in the third inning to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. Reinhart scored on a Nora Staggemeyer RBI bunt single in the sixth.
Lange made it a three-run sixth with a two-run single to cap a 2-for-4 day. Reinhart finished 2-for-3.
Avery Augedahl earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out eight. Her only blemish came on a solo home run by Ashlyn Mantz in the third inning.
Meanwhile, Southland (22-3) saw Shannon Kiefer finish 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Her RBI double gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kiley Koenigs hit a sacrifice fly to score Laney Weis for what proved to be the game-winning run in the third.
Barnum had tied the game with an unearned run in the first and second innings.
Weis earned the win in the circle, working around three errors en route to seven strong innings. She capped her junior season by allowing two unearned runs on four hits, three walks, with a pair of strikeouts.
