The Borussia Dortmund Women’s Team has spent the last few years gradually rising through the ranks of German football, steamrolling through the lower divisions of Westphalia into the Regionalliga West. Now, they have bolstered their ranks with a bona fide legend: Alexandra Popp. The club announced the signing of the 34-year-old star, which will take place over the summer:
Alex Popp hat beim BVB einen Vertrag bis zum 30. Juni 2029 unterschrieben. In ihrer beeindruckenden Karriere gewann sie unter anderem dreimal die Champions League, sieben Deutsche Meisterschaften, 13-mal den DFB-Pokal und 2016 Olympia-Gold in Rio. pic.twitter.com/QeXi3Ctdc1

Popp is one of the most decorated players in Women’s football, with a cabinet full of medals including three Champions League wins, 13 DFB-Pokals, 7 Bundesliga titles, and even an Olympic Gold with Germany. She is still a great player too, currently sitting 5th in the Frauen-Bundesliga with 11 goals in 16 games. Popp is native to the Ruhr and according to Ruhr Nachrichten, is a huge BVB fan, which was a major factor in her decision to come to the club at this point in her career.
Popp is definitely a huge signing, but in a move that could prove just as consequential, Borussia Dortmund have also hired Ralf Kellerman as Sporting Director for the Women’s Team. Kellerman spent over a decade at VfL Wolfsburg, first as head coach and then as Sporting Director. Over that period of time, Wolfsburg became one of the great powerhouses in all of women’s football, winning numerous Bundesliga titles and even the Women’s UEFA Champions League in 2013 and 2014.
Now, as the BVB-Frauen stand on the precipice of promotion into the 2. Bundesliga, the competition is beginning to get stronger. The BVB-Frauen must win the title to have a chance at promotion into the 2. Bundesliga, with a playoff against the champions of the Regionalliga Nord. Unfortunately, BVB sit six points behind Cologne II with a game in hand, due in large part to points deduction suffered earlier in the season. They will need Cologne to drop points at some point in the rest of the season to have a chance at the promotion playoff.
Promotion to the Bundesliga was never going to be seamless. No matter what happens, with Popp coming in the summer and an experienced sporting director at the helm, the future for the BVB women’s team seems bright.
