Alexandra Popp will join third-tier side Borussia Dortmund on a three-year contract in the summer, bringing an end to her 14-year stay at Wolfsburg.Popp, 34, enjoyed a trophy-laden tenure with Wolfsburg, winning the Champions League three times alongside seven Frauen-Bundesliga titles. The forward will leave the top-tier club when her contract expires in the summer, she announced on her social media on Saturday, sat surrounded by her medals.
“My heart beats for this club,” Popp said, per a statement on Dortmund’s website. “I am slowly coming towards the end of my career and I also have to listen to my body. I didn’t want to miss the timing and the chance to play in the BVB jersey.
“The interest of the BVB made me proud from the first moment, I immediately had a big grin on my face. For me it is very exciting to be able to develop the path so far so successful in the future.”
Popp has continued to be a regular in Wolfsburg’s starting XI this season, recording 10 goals and four assists in 15 league matches. She was a key member of the Wolfsburg sides that won seven German titles in 10 years between 2012 and 2022.

The former Germany international has scored 158 goals in 332 Bundesliga appearances, alongside 36 goals in 89 Champions League matches. She retired from international football in October 2024, with her most notable silverware coming in the form of a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“Alexandra Popp is one of the most influential figures in national and international women’s football,” Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer said. “What success stories she has written with a top club like VfL Wolfsburg and the German national team is extremely impressive. We are very pleased that we have succeeded in inspiring Alex for our ambitious journey.”
Managing director, Svenja Schlenker added: “Alex’s commitment is a big exclamation mark for our ambitions. The fact that a player of her format consciously chooses BVB makes us incredibly proud and is a strong signal for the importance and future of women’s football in Dortmund.”
Plans for a women’s team at Dortmund were announced in 2020 and they debuted in the 2021-22 season in the seventh tier of German women’s football. They have since enjoyed four successive promotions. They were knocked out of this season’s DFB Pokal by holders Bayern Munich in the first meeting between the two clubs’ women’s sides.
