Bulldogs stay undefeated in conference action

Class 3A No. 7 Batesville took one step closer to a conference championship Thursday with a 73-35 victory against visiting Rushville.

The Bulldogs improve to 17-2 on the season and 6-0 in the EIAC. A win in Saturday afternoon’s matchup against East Central will give the Bulldogs the conference title.

Rushville drops to 7-12 on the season and ends the conference portion of the regular season at 3-4. Rushville travels to Delta (10-8) Tuesday and to Oldenburg Academy (7-10) Thursday.

Batesville opened the game on a 7-0 run. Back-to-back fast break buckets by Brayden Maple and Trenten Luers was followed by a left-wing 3-pointer by Kamryn Holcomb. A bucket in the lane by Clayton Chase got the Lions on the scoreboard.

Batesville’s James Hughes hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Batesville an 8-point lead. Rushville’s Owen Zachery scored on a drive to the bucket late in the first quarter to cut the deficit to six, but Braydin Hughes grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back to give Batesville a 14-8 lead heading to the second quarter.

The start of the second quarter was huge for the home team. Batesville got back-to-back 3-pointers from Ethan Schneider and a James Hughes on the fast break to extend the lead to 23-6 with 4:57 to play in the quarter.

Batesville continued the run with a free throw from Maple and bucket in the lane by James Hughes as the lead grew to 27-6. Rushville ended the run with a Zachery bucket at the 2:03 mark. A rebound bucket by Emmett Knecht for the Lions closed the first half with the Bulldogs leading 27-10.

Batesville came out of the break with its best quarter of the game. The Bulldogs put the game out of reach with a 27-11 run to lead 54-21. The Bulldogs hit seven 3-pointers in the quarter, four by James Hughes. Maple drained two bombs en route to 10 points and Luers connected from long range. Rushville’s Zy Adams led the Lions with four poitns in the quarter and Ryder Flannery hit a 3-pointer. Knecht and Liam Gurley had the other buckets for the Lions.

Batesville outscored the Lions 19-14 in the fourth quarter to close out the 73-35 victory. Adams scored seven for the Lions and Chase added five. Knecht had the other bucket for Rushville. Six Bulldogs scored in the fourth quarter, including 3-pointers from Luers, Levi Hunt, Lincoln Garrett and Holcomb.

For the game, the Bulldogs were led in scoring by James Hughes with 20 points. Maple was next with 13 points and Holcomb added 11 points. Luers added eight points followed by Hunt seven, Schneider six, Lincoln Garrett three, Braydin Hughes two, Preston Blessing two and Sam Dice one.

For the Lions, Adams led in scoring with 15 points. Chase added seven points followed by Knecht six, Flannery three, Zachery two and Gurley two.

Batesville won the junior varsity contest 49-24. Batesville scoring included Camden Kaiser eight, Sam Dice six, Levi Hunt six, Jackson Peetz six, Hank Bohman five, Liam Moon five, Preston Blessing four, Camden Anderson three, Winston Garrett two, Ryan McGuire two and Luke Richardson two.
