With just four seconds remaining in the ball game, Greenfield-Central’s Malachi Van stepped to the free throw line and knocked down two free throws to put the Cougars up 52-51 against Batesville. The Bulldogs were not able to convert a last second shot as the Cougars escaped with the Batesville Tournament title 52-51.
Those two free throws were Van’s only points of the game.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 5-4. Batesville suffers its first loss and moves to 7-1.
Greenfield-Central led 13-10 after the first quarter and 23-20 at the half. The Cougars pushed the lead to 43-36 after three quarters and led by as much as 10 points in the second half.
A bucket by Batesville’s Brayden Maple gave Batesville a 51-50 lead, but the two late free throws by Van sealed the win for the Cougars.
For Batesville, James Hughes tallied 17 points, five rebounds and two assists. Trenten Luers finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kamryn Holcomb added 10 points and two rebounds. Maple added eight points and three rebounds. Ethan Schneider had three points and two rebounds. Braydin Hughes had two points and one rebound.
Batesville opened the tournament with a 76-66 victory against Austin.
Austin led 18-16 after the first eight minutes, but the Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 26-17 in the second quarter to lead 42-35 at the half. After three quarters, Batesville led 60-50.
Batesville’s Holcomb connected on six 3-pointers en route to 28 points to go with five rebounds and one assist. Luers hit four 3-pointers en route to 16 points, four rebounds and six assists. James Hughes tallied 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Schneider added seven points, three rebounds and four assists. Braydin Hughes had six points and two rebounds. Winston Garrett had three points and one assist. Levi Hunt scored two points. Maple added two points, two rebounds and two assists.
In the junior varsity tournament, Batesville opened with a 65-25 victory against Austin. The Bulldogs led 29-5 after the first quarter and never looked back.
Scoring for the Bulldogs included Winston Garrett 11, Camden Kaiser nine, Liam Wagner nine, Hank Bohman eight, Luke Richardson six, Sam Dice five, Levi Hunt five, Preston Blessing four, Liam Moon four and Jackson Peetz four.
In the championship game, Greenfield-Central knocked off Batesville 63-40.
Batesville scoring included Bohman 13, Kaiser 11, Blessing seven, Peetz three, Dice two, Hunt two and Moon two.
Rushville
The Lions split a pair of home games this past weekend, falling to Greenfield-Central 55-36 and knocking off Union County 48-43.
Friday, Rushville led 10-7 after the first quarter, but a 15-5 run by the Cougars in the second quarter gave GC a 22-15 lead at the break. The Cougars led 39-29 heading to the fourth quarter.
For the Lions, Zy Adams tallied 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Ryder Flannery finished with nine points and one rebound. Owen Zachery had five points, eight rebounds and three assists. Braydin Pease, Gavin Owen and Clayton Chase all scored two points. Emmett Knecht added one rebound and three assists.
Saturday, Rushville led at every quarter break en route to the 5-point victory.
The Lions led 8-5 after the first eight minutes and took a 25-19 lead to the break at the half. After three quarters, Rushville led 34-29.
For Rushville, Chase connected on six 3-pointers for 18 points to go with three rebounds. Knecht added 11 points and two rebounds. Adams had eight points and three rebounds. Liam Gurley added four points and one rebound. Zachery had three points, two rebounds and seven assists. Flannery finished with two points, five rebounds and two assists. Owen scored two points. Pease had one rebound and one assist.
