McAlester boys basketball took a pair of losses over the weekend to Memorial and Ada.

MEMORIAL 58 • MCALESTER 42

The Buffaloes (Class-5A-4 14-6, 5-3) hosted the Chargers (17-2, 9-0) Friday night in a district game that saw Memorial take a second half lead to seal the game.

The Chargers jumped out to an early 4-2 lead before Rodney Washington tied the game with a layup with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. By the end of the period, McAlester was sitting atop Memorial 9-8.

Memorial wasted no time regaining the lead in the second on a 3-pointer just 13 seconds into the quarter but the Buffaloes tied the game 11-11 on two made Washington free throws at the 7:09 mark. Kace Patton gave McAlester the lead on a made 3-point shot a minute and a half later and the Buffaloes would not relent the lead for the remainder of the second period.

McAlester led Memorial 23-18 at halftime.

The Chargers got to work at the beginning of the third quarter, going on an 8-2 run to reclaim the lead which prompted the Buffaloes to call a timeout with 5:52 left in the period. Memorial closed out the quarter on an 8-6 run and held a 34-31 advantage going into the final frame.

The lead grew for the Chargers in the first two minutes of the fourth and McAlester trailed 40-34. The Buffaloes could not get any closer throughout the rest of the quarter and dropped the game 58-42.

Brandon Smith led the way for McAlester in scoring with 17 points, going 10-for-14 at the free throw line. A junior, Smith scored his 1,000th point of his career in the game.

Washington had 13 points and Davien Pouncil had seven on 5-for-12 shooting at the charity stripe.

ADA 68 • MCALESTER 60

The Buffaloes couldn’t complete the comeback over the Cougars (Class-4A 14-3) in a chippy game.

Ada jumped out to a quick 7-6 lead and didn’t give the lead up for the rest of the game. By the end of the first quarter, McAlester was behind 20-14.

The Cougars outscored the Buffaloes 21-11 in the second period to hold a 41-25 lead at the halftime break. McAlester began its comeback bid in the third quarter.

The Buffaloes held Ada to just eight points in the third and scored 15 of their own to whittle down the deficit to 49-40 going into the fourth. With 3:38 remaining in the game, McAlester was behind just four points 57-53 when Washington fouled an Ada player going up for a dunk attempt, then he went down injured.

After a brief time on the floor, Washington was assisted to the bench, from which he did not return for the rest of the game. On the way back to the bench, coach Lou Dawkins exchanged words with a referee, who then gave him a technical.

Ada shot the free throws for the shooting foul and the technical and went 3-for-4 at the line to go up 60-53. The opponents seemed to gain momentum for the remainder of the game. The Cougars ended the contest on a 8-7 run and took the game 68-60.

After the game, Dawkins was not pleased with the officiating crew. Dawkins believed that Washington would not have fouled the Ada player and gotten hurt if the referees would have called previous fouls in favor of the Buffaloes.

“None of that would have taken place if the previous whistles would have been blown but they don’t see it like that,” Dawkins said. “And then you’ve got the referees telling my players, ‘you guys aren’t happy anymore, huh?’ It’s sad.”

Dawkins said the officials told him they don’t need to make calls because McAlester is so athletic.

Despite the issues with the officiating, Dawkins was happy to see his team come back from being down 16 at halftime. He says his team needs to have more energy from the jump to match their opponents’ level.

“We’re the hunted now,” Dawkins said. “We’re the lions, we’re the tigers. People are going to come after us.”

Now, Dawkins’ focus shifts toward ending the season on a high note and hosting a first round playoff series. McAlester currently sits in third place in its district.

“We have the players to do it, the team to do it,” Dawkins said. “I’m not worried about this loss (Ada), I’m not worried about last night’s loss (Memorial), I’m looking at what tomorrow has in store for us.”

McAlester plays again 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road against Claremore.
