McAlester boys basketball split two games in the regional tournament to move on to the area tournament.

The Buffaloes (18-8) took down Bishop Kelley (8-16) in the first round of regionals 39-31 to ensure they would advance to the area tournament. But Collinsville (24-3) won in the regional championship game 64-57.

The Comets deployed a unique strategy in attempt to stall the McAlester offense.

The game started as any normal basketball game would and after the first quarter, the Buffaloes led 13-8. Bishop Kelley started off the second quarter with a layup 14 seconds in to make it a 13-10 game.

On the next possession Rodney Washington threw down an emphatic dunk to put McAlester up 15-10 with 6:41 remaining in the quarter. The Comets got the ball back, dribbled the ball past half court and then just stood there.

Bishop Kelley drained the clock until there was 10 seconds remaining then drew a foul and split a pair of free throws and the Buffaloes led 15-11 at halftime.

McAlester got the ball first at the beginning of the third quarter and Jasper Meat hit a layup 10 seconds in to go up 17-11. Bishop Kelley got the ball back, dribbled past half court and stood there again, draining the clock.

The Comets held the ball again until there were 10 seconds remaining, shot a three which hit the side of the backboard and McAlester took the ball down and hit a layup on the other end.

Bishop Kelley did not employ the clock draining strategy in the fourth and McAlester won 39-31.

“Why should we go out and waste our energy, waste our legs if they’re just sitting back at half court stalling the basketball?” coach Lou Dawkins said. “I don’t know why coach decided to do that but it doesn’t make sense for me to go out there and defend them when we’re winning.”

It was a close game against Collinsville but one that the Cardinals pulled away from late.

Collinsville led 19-15 at the end of the first quarter but McAlester came back in the second to hold a 36-34 lead at halftime. The Buffaloes clung to the slim margin in the third and led 49-47 going into the final frame.

The Comets came back in the fourth and took the game 64-57.

Dawkins said losing the game came down to lack of effort on things like loose balls. He said he counted four times when Collinsville dived for loose balls and his team did not.

“When you’re in a tournament situation, do or die, everything is so important, everything is so vital,” Dawkins said. “We have to understand everything matters.”

McAlester plays Tahlequah in the first round of the area tournament 7:30 p.m. Friday at Enid.
