McAlester couldn’t contain East Central in a 73-56 road loss Friday.
The Buffaloes (Class-5A-4 15-7, 7-4) dropped the second of two games in the season series against the Cardinals (Class-5A-4 17-5, 11-1).
Things started out right for McAlester as Cayven Hill and Jasper Meat got layups within the first minute of the game to go up 4-0. The Buffaloes took the biggest lead of the first quarter when Davien Pouncil hit a layup to make the score 10-5 with 4:36 left.
East Central tied the game 14-14 by the end of the first frame.
A 3-point make began the scoring for the Cardinals in the second quarter. East Central hit five treys in the second en route to taking a 35-26 lead at halftime.
McAlester narrowly edged out the Cardinals 20-19 in the third and East Central held a 54-46 advantage going into the final quarter. In the fourth, the Cardinals kept up their offensive display while holding the Buffaloes to just 10 points and McAlester lost the game 73-56.
Coach Lou Dawkins liked what he saw from his team early but would have liked to see them continue in the second half.
“I saw some great things in the first and second, pounding the ball inside, we crashed the offensive glass,” Dawkins said. “And then we got away from it.
“Why not keep milking a cow of something that’s working and continue until the cow just ain’t got no more milk? (SIC)”
Turnovers plagued the Buffaloes throughout the game. Dawkins cited out of bounds plays as something his team needs to be better at.
“One minute of relaxing can come back and haunt you,” Dawkins said. “It killed us, it buried us.”
With just three games remaining on the regular season schedule, Dawkins said it’s time for McAlester to put it all together.
“I want to use the excuse that we’re young but sometimes a man’s got to grow up,” Dawkins said. “We’ve got March Madness (playoffs) in two weeks.”
McAlester plays again 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road at Tahlequah.
