Bubba Chandler Vents Frustration On His Outing Against Phillies originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were looking to get back on track on Saturday as the team turned to Bubba Chandler.
However, the right-hander struggled out of the gates, as he allowed a three-run home run to Bryce Harper in the first inning, before he even recorded an out. The Phillies got out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning, as Chandler allowed four earned runs on three hits in three innings.
It was a frustrating outing for Chandler, who felt like he didn’t pitch the way he normally does.
“They’re good players,” Chandler said postgame on Saturday of Turner, Schwarber, and Harper as the Phillies’ first three hitters. “I’ve watched them play for the last decade, and they’re all three really good. Just soft, pitching away, just not being who I am.”
Pirates manager Don Kelly, meanwhile, said it was a tough start for Chandler, and the pitch count was a reason for the decision to pull him after three innings.
“It was a tough start there in the first couple of innings, throwing 60-some pitches in two innings,” Kelly said. “To get him out after the third, it was just pitch count and volume, and he slipped on the mound there. Just didn't want to push it there any further. We had enough to get through the game in the bullpen.”
With the rough outing, Chandler is now 1-5 with a 5.14 ERA in 9 starts this season.
Pittsburgh will look to avoid being swept by the Phillies on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. ET.
