Pirates Manager Pleased With Bubba Chandler's Outing originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates opened their three-game road series with the Houston Astros with a big 10-6 win.
Pittsburgh gave the ball to right-hander Bubba Chandler who was searching for his first win since April 17 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Early on, Chandler faced some adversity as the Pirates trailed 2-0 and 4-2, but the right-hander was able to stay composed, which Pirates manager Don Kelly was pleased about.
“He did great,” Kelly said postgame on Tuesday. “They came out first two pitches, two swings and we’re down 2-0. For him to slow things down and get through five innings, four runs and then Cruz with the big home run in the sixth to give us the lead.”
Chandler ended up going five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out three. It was a good outing, and Kelly was impressed with how Chandler adjusted and was able to work his way out of trouble.
“It could have been completely different if Bubba gets out of his rhythm and started to press in that moment,” Kelly said. “It could have been completely different. He didn’t. He stayed with it. He continued to attack the strike zone and got through five innings, [91] pitches. He gave us a chance to get the win and got the win.”
Chandler is now 2-6 with a 4.89 ERA in 12 starts this season after his start against the Astros.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, ended up beating Houston 10-6 to extend its win streak to four games. The Pirates will look for the series win on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. ET.
