The Cleveland Browns are loading up their schedule this week with second interviews for candidates to replace Kevin Stefanski as the team's head coach. Mike McDaniel, who was fired as the Dolphins' head coach earlier this month, is set to come into town for an in-person second interview with Cleveland.
McDaniel had an overall record of 35-35 with the Dolphins, including two playoff losses, for a 35-33 regular-season record in Miami. He was notably with the Browns as their wide receivers coach under then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in 2014, before both went to Atlanta after the season.
McDaniel would count as one of the two minority candidates required to interview in person, so the Browns would still need to have an in-person interview with someone else to satisfy the Rooney Rule. He's a smart offensive mind and a good playcaller, but I think he is best suited to be an offensive coordinator, not a head coach. However, hiring him would be much better than hiring Jim Schwartz.
