The Cleveland Browns are down to five candidates for their pool of second interviews in their search for new head coach.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has informed the team he is withdrawing from their head-coaching search, according to the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The Akron Beacon Journal has confirmed the report.

McDaniel was scheduled to be in Northeast Ohio on Jan. 21 for his second interview with the team. He remains a head-coaching candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens vacancies, as well as several offensive coordinator positions that are open.

Mike McDaniel's record as an NFL head coach

McDaniel, 42, lasted four years, finishing his first NFL head-coaching stint at 35-33, including his first two seasons in which Miami made the playoffs but lost to Buffalo and Kansas City. The Dolphins went 7-10 this season.

Browns coaching search second interviews

The Browns have interviewed defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz on Jan. 19 and were scheduled to interview Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken on Jan. 20 among their second interviews. The other three still to be scheduled: Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, Los Angeles Chargers Jesse Minter and Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.

The Browns' search for a head coach began after Kevin Stefanski was fired on Jan. 5 after six seasons, a 45-56 record and two playoff berths. That came a day after the Browns finished 5-12, completing an 8-26 two-year stretch.
