A potential door has been opened for the Penn State Nittany Lions basketball team in the recruiting trail, in somewhat of a highly unusual way. Just mere days after his brother Kayden Mingo decided to enter the transfer portal, Dylan Mingo, a five star recruit in the Class of 2026, decided to decommit from the North Carolina Tar Heels. While rumors are circulating about whether or not he will simply follow his brother, the fact that Penn State was originally among his top three schools should give the program hope.
While Mingo did not get to play out his final high school season due to injury, he has already garnered widespread attention as a standout prospect. Not only did he impress in EYBL leagues, he was also named MVP of the NBA top 100 camp after averaging 23.8 points, 6.8 assists, and 6.5 rebounds. Should Penn State re-enter the race to sign him and ultimately do end up landing him for next year, he would be the highest-ranked prospect in program history.
It is important to note that Mingo did not take many visits to different campuses, only visiting four. Perhaps this time around, he will do his due diligence to pick the right fit for him. However, it does seem clear that Mingo may want a situation that's already firmly set in stone, after UNC fired Hubert Davis and hired NBA title winner Michael Malone.
That being said, Mingo would immediately raise the ceiling for a Penn State program looking for some source of identity. Without his brother, Dylan would be the face of Penn State basketball for years to come. Still, it remains to be seen what exactly his de-commitment meant and which program he truly has his sights set on.
