One of Penn State basketball's best players has found a new home in the transfer portal. However, the fallout surrounding his move could have even bigger stakes than you think. Just mere days after announcing he would be entering the transfer portal, guard Kayden Mingo announced he would be taking his talents to Waco, Texas to play for the Baylor Bears.
Mingo's ultimate decision to transfer came as a massive blow to Mike Rhoades and his staff, as Mingo was seen to be a building block for a more positive future for the Nittany Lions. In his freshman season, Mingo led the team in scoring average, with 13.7 points per game, averaged 4.3 assists and 2.1 steals. Still, the biggest news coming out of this transfer may not be about Kayden Mingo at all, but his brother.
Many expected that since Kayden Mingo entered the transfer portal, no matter what, Dylan Mingo, one of the highest-rated recruits in the class, would follow suit. Still, Dylan de-committed from UNC after his brother Kayden entered the portal, leaving much up to debate. Now that Kayden has found a school, chances are Dylan will soon join him, especially since Baylor was in his final four choices.
For Penn State, that means that Rhoades may have to rely on Miami(Ohio) transfer Brant Byers more than he may have expected. For Byers, it's an opportunity to continue to grow as a starter and hone his unique skill set. Still, it will hurt to see both Mingo brothers plying their trades with different schools when they could have been the tandem to take Penn State basketball to higher heights than the program could have ever imagined.
