The Denver Broncos officially placed backup center Michael Deiter (quad) on season-ending injured reserve on Thursday, according to the NFL's transaction wire.

Deiter was carted off the field during Tuesday's training camp practice, and tests later revealed the quad injury. "I don’t have the specifics, but it’s going to require surgery," coach Sean Payton said after Wednesday's practice. "I feel bad for him and where he was at.” Payton said Deiter had been performing well before the injury.

Broncos starting center Luke Wattenberg and primary backup Alex Forsyth are also injured, leaving the team thin at center. Calvin Throckmorton and Gavin Ortega seem to be the next two options, and guards Quinn Meinerz and Kage Casey could also fill in at center if needed.

After placing Deiter on IR, Denver filled his former spot on the 91-man offseason roster by signing veteran center Lecitus Smith on Thursday. It's unclear if Smith will be available to play in Friday's preseason opener.
