The Denver Broncos have made a big decision on Sean Payton's future. The ex-New Orleans Saints coach is getting a five-year extension with his new team, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, having led them to a 32-19 record the last three years. That win percentage (.627) falls a hair under what he achieved in fifteen years with the Saints (.631, or 152-89). Denver traded a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft (which was spent on defensive tackle Bryan Bresee) plus a second rounder in the 2024 NFL Draft (which became cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry).
Saints fans are understandably tired of hearing about what Payton has gotten up to since bailing on their team. But he's part of the Saints' story after leaving a permanent mark on the team record books. He was the winningest coach in franchise history and the architect of their first Super Bowl win. Some fans thought he could have gotten the team to .500, had he stuck around; they were 237-352-5 (.403) when he was hired in 2006 and 396-450-5 (.468) when he called it quits in 2021. After a couple of directionless years without him, now New Orleans is 423-491-5 (.463). They're hoping Kellen Moore can get them back in the win column, but it'll take a long time to reach .500.
When will the Saints see him again? Payton's Broncos are not on the 2026t schedule, or the list of potential opponents in 2027. Instead, the black and gold will make a business trip to Denver in 2028 for what may be one of the last regular season games played at the Broncos' historic stadium, Empower Field at Mile High. A new stadium has been proposed but isn't expected to open its doors until 2031. Either way, emotions are going to be running high when Payton is patrolling the opposing sideline.
