The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they have acquired goalie Joseph Woll and left-handed defenseman Simon Benoit in exchange for goalie Sam Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a 2026 3rd-round pick.
Both Ersson and Andrae are pending RFAs who remain unsigned. Woll is entering year 2 of a 3-year deal worth $3.66 million annually. Benoit has 1 year remaining on a deal that carries a $1.35 million AAV.
Ersson and Andrae were both players in need of a change of scenery. Andrae has clearly fallen out of the top-6 defenseman later in the season, being scratched and rotating with Noah Juulsen during the playoff push. Ersson had an up-and-down season, where he finished strong, but it was not quite enough for the Flyers to not make a change at either position.
Instead, they add Woll, 27, who in 117 games with the Maple Leafs has earned 63 wins, 4 shutouts, and a 2.94 GAA, and a .906 SV%. A down year in 2025-26 moved Woll down in the Maple Leafs depth chart, and made it time for a change of scenery as well.
By adding Benoit, also 27, they are replacing Andrae, an undersized offensive defenseman, with a big 6’4″, physical, and steady stay-at-home defender. Benoit could end up rounding out the Flyers’ 7 defenseman, with Travis Sanheim, Rasmus Ristolainen, Cam York, Jamie Drysdale, Nick Seeler, David Jiricek, and Benoit.
That is, if the Flyers do not make another move, of course.
With the trade with Toronto, the Flyers are now down to just 4 picks in the 2026 NHL Draft: a 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th round pick.
Could this be the beginning of a busy summer for Flyers GM Danny Briere? What do you think of the move?
