It's only been a few days since we saw the Stanley Cup awarded to the Carolina Hurricanes, but the rest of the league is not content to sit on its laurels as the offseason begins.
On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs made a swap of backup goaltenders and depth defensemen, with netminder Joseph Woll headed to Philadelphia in the deal. It's not a major trade by any means, but it's certainly one of significance for the two clubs as they work to improve their teams for the upcoming season.
The Flyers and Maple Leafs are no stranger to making trades either, as in recent years Philadelphia sent veteran forward Scott Laughton to Toronto at the 2025 trade deadline for a first-round pick and a prospect in return.
So, with the dust settling on this deal, let's take a look at the details between this player swap between the Flyers and Maple Leafs and hand out grades accordingly!
Philadelphia Flyers get: G Joseph Woll, D Simon Benoit
Toronto Maple Leafs get: G Samuel Ersson, D Emil Andrae, 2026 third-round pick
The Flyers get the best player in this trade in Woll, who now slots behind Dan Vladar in net as Philadelphia's backup. While Woll dealt with an injury in the 2025-26 season which caused him to play just 39 games this year, the 27-year-old goaltender has shown promise. In his last three seasons with 20-plus games played, Woll has posted a .904 save percentage and a 54-41 record with the Maple Leafs.
Benoit is a big-body defenseman and is certainly a depth piece for the Flyers as they continue to make tweaks to their blue line. However, Woll will for sure make the biggest impact on the Flyers going forward as general manager Danny Briere has put together a pretty solid goaltender tandem with a Vladar extension looking likely this offseason.
Grade: B+
Ersson is a worse backup option than Woll, but is a current RFA so he's likely not going to be Toronto's second netminder outside of the short-term. In four seasons with the Flyers as a starter and backup, Ersson has an .884 save percentage and a 65-50 record and will do just fine slotting in behind Anthony Stolarz.
On the other side of this defense swap, Andrae is a small body but works hard and has a high motor. It's quite possible that if he develops right, Andrae could be the steal of this trade for the Maple Leafs, but the 24-year-old has work to put in to reach his potential.
Overall, the Maple Leafs are slightly worse off than they were before this trade, but acquiring a third-round pick as well is still a fine grab all the same.
Grade: C
