Ahead of Saturday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, the Boston Red Sox placed veteran infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the 10-day injured list with left forearm inflammation, the team announced.
The veteran utility man was a late scratch from Boston’s lineup in Friday night’s 6-2 win over the Mariners, with the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey first reporting that the 31-year-old was dealing with left elbow inflammation.
On Saturday afternoon, Healey reported that Kiner-Falefa would undergo an MRI on the injured elbow, which had been bothering him for two weeks. Though, according to Healey, Kiner-Falefa didn’t think the injury was a big deal.
Kiner-Falefa has found himself a mainstay at second base in the wake of the injury to Trevor Story, pushing Marcelo Mayer to shortstop. The 31-year-old caught fire in his first taste of consistent playing time, hitting .429/.512/.571 in his first 16 games. But he had cooled off significantly, hitting .222/.286/.333 in his last 14 games, almost exactly lining up with the injury.
Utility man Anthony Seigler will be recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take Kiner-Falefa’s place on the roster.
Seigler is back with the big league club just 11 days after being optioned to Worcester when reliever Garrett Whitlock was activated off the injured list on June 9.
Seigler went 1-for-3 with a double while appearing in two games during his first stint with the Red Sox. The 27-year-old has hit .290/.409/.435/.844 with three home runs and 23 RBI in 37 games for Worcester.
A former first-round pick of the Yankees, Seigler was acquired by the Red Sox from the Milwaukee Brewers alongside Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio in exchange for pitchers Shane Drohan and Kyle Harrison, and shortstop David Hamilton.
According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Romy Gonzalez’s timeline has been “slowed” after hip flexor soreness. The 29-year-old has gone 1-for-7 with a two-run home run in three games with Double-A Portland.
Left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval made his third rehab appearance with Portland on Wednesday, tossing three innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out four and walking one. The 44 pitches thrown mark the most the 29-year-old has thrown in any of his three appearances.
The Red Sox will look to take the series from the Mariners on Saturday night in game two of a three-game set. Connelly Early (5-5, 3.81 ERA) will look to bounce back from the worst start of his major league career when he gets the start for Boston opposite Emerson Hancock (5-3, 3.28 ERA) for Seattle. First pitch from T-Mobile Park set for 10:10 p.m. ET.
