Injuries to other Red Sox infielders have allowed veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa to step up and become an everyday lineup staple over the last month. Now, Kiner-Falefa himself is injured.

The Red Sox placed Kiner-Falefa on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 19) with left forearm inflammation on Saturday and recalled Anthony Seigler from Triple-A Worcester to take his roster spot in Seattle. Kiner-Falefa was scratched from the lineup Friday and underwent an MRI.

Kiner-Falefa told reporters that he has been dealing with forearm issues for the past couple of weeks and as a result, has not swung before games. The issue worsened Friday when his forearm swelled up after the club’s six-hour flight to Seattle. On Saturday, the recommendation was that Kiner-Falefa shuts down baseball activities for a few days. He can return as soon as next Sunday (June 28) against the Yankees if the issue subsides.

“Maybe it’s preventing something way bigger,” Kiner-Falefa said, via NESN’s pregame show. “Just trusting what they have in store. If it got to that point, it’s not June and not swinging before games and having all that sharpness throughout the day is probably not a good idea at this point in the year. If this is October, it’s a little different but it’s June and we’ve got a long way to go. It sucks but you’ve just got to trust what the doctor is saying.”

Before Friday, Kiner-Falefa had started 22 of 23 games (including 19 in a row) for the Red Sox since mid-May. Injuries to Trevor Story (sports hernia) and Nick Sogard (oblique) opened up playing time for Kiner-Falefa, who has started games at second base, shortstop and third base. Recently, he has been the primary second baseman alongside shortstop Marcelo Mayer.

Kiner-Falefa has hit .294 with two homers, two doubles, seven RBIs and a .772 OPS since May 26 after playing sparingly to start the season. In his absence, the Red Sox will likely split playing time at second base between Seigler and Andruw Monasterio, who has started there the last two days. Seigler is leading off and playing there Saturday night.

Seigler, who celebrates his 27th birthday Saturday, is up for his second big league stint with the Red Sox after being acquired along with Caleb Durbin and Monasterio in a March trade with Milwaukee. He was 1-for-3 with a double in two games (one start) during his first call-up earlier this month. At Triple-A, Seigler has hit .290 with three homers, eight doubles and an .844 OPS in 37 games while playing both second and third base.
