Three games into a rehab assignment at Double-A Portland, Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez has had a setback that might further delay his season debut.
Gonzalez was lifted after two plate appearances Friday night and is out of Portland’s lineup Saturday after experiencing soreness in his hip flexor, according to sources. The Red Sox are “collecting more information” on the issue with Gonzalez going for tests. At this point, Gonzalez has not been formally pulled off his rehab assignment.
Gonzalez joined Portland for a rehab assignment Tuesday as he began what was thought to be the final step in his return to action after undergoing minor shoulder surgery in March. He homered in Tuesday’s game and played again Wednesday before an off day Thursday. The hip issue popped up during Friday’s game with Gonzalez, who was playing first base, grounding out twice before being lifted in the top of the fifth inning.
Before his latest setback, the 29-year-old Gonzalez, who hit .305 with nine homers, 53 RBIs and an .826 OPS in 96 games for the Red Sox last season, was expected to join the big league team soon. Interim manager Chad Tracy said Thursday that there was “an outside chance” Gonzalez could be activated during the team’s series in Colorado, which begins Monday, adding that a return during next weekend’s series against the Yankees was more likely. Now, things are on hold again.
Gonzalez is expected to see a good amount of at-bats at second base and designated hitter when he returns. The Red Sox’ middle infield depth took another hit Saturday with the club placing Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the injured list due to a forearm issue, according to sources. Anthony Seigler was recalled from Triple-A Worcester and will start at second base against the Mariners.
Along with Gonzalez and Kiner-Falefa, shortstop Trevor Story and utility man Nick Sogard are both currently on the IL. For now, the Red Sox are using Marcelo Mayer as the everyday shortstop with Seigler and Andruw Monasterio expected to be the primary options at second base until others return.
