I think the biggest mistake the coaching staff is doing right now is not playing Massie. He is clearly one of our five best linemen. I would start him at RG over Fanaika. I would even start him over Levi at LT and move Levi In at guard. Either way Massie should be starting to give Carson Palmer the best chance to stay upright and off his back.

You would move Levi to guard without ever playing him at guard during the preseason or training camp?

I think what he is saying is, that he likes his talent level better then Brown or Fanika. We should have started from camp to groom him as the Tackle or Guard to be a starter now He is young and quick. Playing well in his rookie season after going through a huge learning curve.

I like Massie and I'm very surprised when he wasn't named a starter and that's only one reason I'm not coaching.

This early in the season, the coaching staff may be relying on experience to be a hedge against better talent. It would make sense that playing smarter, and making fewer mental errors, would be the way to go at this juncture. With 27 new players on the roster, experience may be the way to proceed at this early point.

I would agree is LEvi Brown didnt make the most mental errors on the offensive line each year.

Winston never should have been signed and Massie should be starting at RT where he belongs.

Yikes what? Massie got progressively better as the year went on and gave up exactly 0 sacks in his last 9 games last season. The kid is talented and a natural RT. Winston is old and aging and was nothing spectacular in the PS

There's a reason the Texans didn't sign him and the Chiefs let him go pretty quickly.

I disagree. Winston should be on this team...as the backup. Massie, I think is the better player. Unfortunately, I guess he didn't show it to BA, because he lost his job for now. I think he'll be a fixture in the starting lineup by Halloween, though.

Massie didn't stand a chance their minds were made up the 2nd they signed Winston.. That was clear. A shame too. Massie won't forget that at time to resign.

That would be my second choice but yes. Massie has better feet than Levi and I believe both Massie and Levi would be better than Fanaika at guard.

Yes, there was... $$$

And he clearly outplayed Massie in PS.

Winston beat him out in camp fair and square.

The problem is we have 3 RT's and no LT, and I don't think any of the 3 of them are capable of playing G very well. So with the injury to Cooper we have an odd situation where one of our best 5 is not playing because he's not a G.

I wouldn't be surprised if we're already exploring moving someone to G in practice to see if they can possibly do it. I watched the 49ers old OL coach do that for years every year they were moving guys around and making it work.

But, we don't have one snap at guard to give any evidence that this is true.

You are right about that. I believe both Massie and Levi have a much higher talent level than Fanaika and that would make the difference. Plus it's a lot easier for a tackle to move to guard than the other way around.

Massie gave up no sacks on the Right side because the Defenses had a flood gate wide open on the Left side, so possibly they didn't even try on the right side.

Have to say, I'd like them to try Massie at some point, although Arians said experimenting is for OTA's.

Yes, he will.

The idea that any player would hold something over a team when it comes to a contract, especially one that is two or three seasons down the road, is ridiculous.

I like Massie. He seemed to play better in the last 8 games last year. But it's tough to judge how much better. The offense completely changed. Since we had no offense, it was a constant barrage of 3 step drops and chuck a quick pass (usually incomplete). When it became clear we had no pass pro, this is what happened. The line was no longer asked to sustain blocks for any period of time.

This preseason, when I watched I wondered if Massie was picking up his assignments correctly. I don't pretend to know the scheme, but what I noticed was he seemed occasionally to pick the wrong guy, leaving blitzers with free shots to the QB. Only the coaches (or really skilled evaluators) really know this. He did seem to pass block effectively overall. Run blocking, I don't really know.

Also, the idea of not bringing in someone like Winston when you have the opportunity baffles me. Bring in all the quality you can, and pick the best players. Depth never hurt anyone. Most people dislike it when we DON'T bring guys in.

In the week 1 traning camp practice that I watched, Massie was getting an earfull from Arians about something. Not sure what it was about.

I also read in Urban's recent chat that Massie was making way too many mental errors for Arians liking.

As of right now, I don't Massie is close to being as good as Winston is as a RT. but I will agree I would have Massey starting at RG, LG or LT, and I predict by week 4 he's in the lineup somewhere.
