It can be tough to exist on the fringes of MLB.

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Austin Voth is serving as the latest example of that.

The Blue Jays acquired Voth after he spent Spring Training with the Chicago White Sox, and he made his first Toronto appearance over the weekend.

Voth went 2.2 innings, allowing a lone run and getting valuable outs for a dinged-up Blue Jays pitching staff.

On Monday, though, Voth was designated for assignment.

That means he's removed from the 40-man roster, and another team can claim him off waivers.

The Blue Jays only get to send him to Triple-A Buffalo if Voth clears waivers.

The 33-year old, 6-foot-2 right-hander is originally a fifth-round pick by the Washington Nationals in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Since then, he has pitched in 208 MLB games between the Nats, Orioles, Mariners and Blue Jays. Of those, 39 games were started.

Voth is still more of a length guy, even if he wouldn't be in an MLB starting rotation.

He last pitched in the big leagues in 2024 for Seattle before this, and he had a 3.69 ERA in 68 appearances.

Voth strikes out 8.5 batters per nine innings and walks 3.2 per nine innings in his MLB career, both passable ratios.

Someone very well might give him a shot. The Blue Jays needed to get fresh arms into the bullpen, and the only way to do that was to DFA Voth. So now they run the risk of losing him.
