The Toronto Blue Jays have struggled at times this season to find consistency, as injuries have heavily impacted their starting rotation. However, the team is beginning to get back on track.

Toronto is expected to be aggressive in adding another starting pitcher at the trade deadline, and one name they have already shown interest in is Tarik Skubal.

“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.

If the Blue Jays are unable to land Skubal, they are expected to pivot elsewhere. SI’s Curt Bishop believes Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan would be an excellent alternative to bolster the rotation.

“The Blue Jays recently got some reinforcements with the returns of Max Scherzer and Dylan Cease. Shane Bieber is also moving closer to a return, but they still have been hit hard by injuries this year. Cody Ponce is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in April, so one more starter wouldn't hurt. The Blue Jays would also give Ryan a chance to compete for a postseason contender after the Twins fell apart a few years ago,” Bishop wrote.

Toronto is eager to return to the World Series after falling just one win short of a championship. The Blue Jays’ rotation will be a key factor in determining how far they can go in October.

Ryan is currently on a team-friendly $6.2 million contract, making him an appealing target. After coming so close to a title, Toronto is expected to be aggressive at the deadline, and adding a pitcher like Ryan could make a significant difference in their postseason push.
