Blue Jays predicted to trade for Marlins' 4.01 ERA Cy Young winner originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Toronto Blue Jays should be one of the top World Series contenders this season after coming just one win shy of the title last year.
But, between some offensive regression and especially their injury-riddled starting rotation, the Blue Jays really could use some help by this year's MLB trade deadline.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report is predicting the Blue Jays will add help this summer in the form of a trade for 4.01 ERA Miami Marlins right-handed Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.
Blue Jays predicted to trade for Sandy Alcantara
"Toronto Blue Jays (39-40): They'll get Sandy Alcantara from the Marlins," Rymer predicts. "... But their rotation still needs a top-of-the-rotation arm, and Alcantara is one of the best they can get."
While there might be a ton of focus on Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers or Minnesota Twins' Joe Ryan, adding Alcantara might be one of the better moves a team could make this summer.
While Alcantara's 4.01 ERA this season isn't exactly the best in baseball, he's still a good starter, and as a former Cy Young winner, he has some incredibly high upside.
Plus, he's also under club control through the 2027 season, so the Blue Jays would get 1.5 seasons out of Alcantara if they trade for him. But that would mean he'll cost a bit more than a typical rental of his caliber, like Robbie Ray.

However, as Rymer writes, the Marlins are "better-off aiming for someone like Johnny King," as opposed to JoJo Parker or Arjun Nimmala from the Toronto farm system.
If the Blue Jays could add a starter as good as Alcantara without giving up their best prospect, it would be a huge win.
Shane Bieber's first start back from the IL this season didn't go well, and with Max Scherzer on the IL, along with Cody Ponce, Bowden Francis, and Jose Berrios all out for the year, the Blue Jays could really use another good starter.
Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, and Trey Yesavage are a good group of starters, but adding Alcantara would allow for less pressure on Bieber and Patrick Corbin, with his 4.73 ERA, to come out of the rotation.
