The Cincinnati Bengals project as buyers in NFL free agency and certainly have the cap space to do so.
According to Over the Cap, the Bengals currently have roughly $47.2 million in free cap space after the NFL’s announcement of next year’s salary cap.
By choosing not to franchise tag Trey Hendrickson, the Bengals avoided that $30.2 million cap charge and will instead focus on their own and outside free agents.
Here’s a quick rundown.
Of these names, fans can cross off Hendrickson, Geno Stone, Noah Fant, Jake Browning and Cam Taylor-Britt as not coming back…for a variety of reasons.
The Bengals might get in the Joseph Ossai market if it isn’t unreasonable. They would like Joe Flacco back, but he’s going to take his time looking for a starting job.
Those cuts and or trades added up to the lump sum.
We’ve removed BJ Hill, based on how Bengals brass have talked about him this offseason. And we’ve added some areas of the roster sure to get beefed up in free agency and the draft. They don’t need to make these cuts now, but they’re names to keep in mind.
These are the big two. Turner’s breakout might mean he gets top-of-market value, which could make things tricky. They might want to wait and see if Hill keeps playing well on the boundary and can stay healthy, but getting it done early at his current price point might make sense, too.
