HUNTSVILLE — The magic number remains one for Sam Houston men’s basketball as they look to lock up a bye in the Conference USA Tournament.

As Liberty locked up the CUSA regular season title on Saturday, the Bearkats continued their winning ways, keeping a two-game lead over Western Kentucky. For the Kats to lock it up, they need a win over Delaware or Liberty, or get a Hilltopper loss. The two seed would match Sam Houston up with the winner of the 7th and 10th seed game on March 11, and would have a bye into Friday.

Sam Houston kept its grip on the two seed with an 86-81 win over Missouri State Saturday as this squad continues to play with eight players after injuries have depleted the roster.

“We are grateful, but we aren’t full,” Sam Houston guard Po’Boigh King said. “We still have some stuff to finish. The jobs not done.”

King has been a pivotal part of this team’s success, as Sam Houston took to the transfer portal to rebuild a team after a disappointing 2024-25. King was one of those guys.

Mudge and his staff found him from North Carolina Central and brought him in. King has made starts in all 29 games, averaging 28.5 minutes in those games and leads the Bearkats in scoring.

King averages 14.4 points per game and has hit over 20 points five times this season. King was one of four seniors on this team. But it’s the way this group of seniors has come together with Damon Nicholas Jr., Velijko Illic and Kashie Natt to have this team at 21 wins with three guaranteed games remaining.

“It was a great win and a great way to send out our seniors, but we have a lot of basketball left,” Sam Houston head coach Chris Mudge said.

But with two games remaining before it becomes win or go home, the Bearkats have a chance to continue to improve and make their game the best they can before heading to Huntsville, Alabama, for the Conference USA tournament.

“There is so much room for improvement, and for us to win three games in three or four days, we have to be playing our best basketball,” Mudge said. “I want us to get better, stick together and play tough. If we do that, we will put ourselves in the best chance we can.”

Sam Houston will head back to the court at 6 p.m. Thursday, when they take on Delaware.
