Zac Taylor and Mike McDonald.

Several I would rate the same.

And even more if this season goes the way we hope/expect.

The reason for me is that Gannon has consistently shown that his teams play better than the talent should be able to. That is a big for my evaluation. The ability to elevate the team’s talent.

If we shift to the round ball in European soccer, the hottest coach this off-season was Frank (signed by Tottenham). He never won anything. He never coached a big team before. What he did over the last three season was producing the 12th best team in Britain while have the 36th budget for players, while having his star players that he developed signed by bigger teams every season

Zac Taylor is an offensive playcaller, 40-27 over the past four seasons, including a super bowl appearance and conference championship game appearance, and you'd take Gannon over him in a walk? I know those first two seasons were putrid (6-25-1), but I think he adds value both as a playcaller and as someone who gets out of the way. The defense has held Cincy back over the past two seasons.

I don't understand quibbling with a guy whose one spot above Gannon on this list and had an objectively better season and better defense with similar-ish talent, but do you.

Obviously this isn't European soccer. There's only one prize at the end of the day. You don't get to make the playoffs because you went 8-9 with bad players. There's no Europa Conference league in the NFL.

Well, Duh... It isn't soccer. My point was that Frank was the hottest coach in soccer because he has consistently shown that he can make his teams outperform their talent level. That was the comparison I was trying to make to explain why I was higher on Gannon.

I'm not that high on Taylor. He has had very talented star players on offense to work with, but his teams often look unprepared and loses games that they shouldn't.

Either way. Thank you for the thread. Happy to see that you are spending you knowledge on something with a positive contribution to the board. More of that, please.

Your hatred for the Steelers is showing
Actually, no. I WANT Tomlin to coach the Stillers forever. That tells you all you need to know about what I think of Tomlin as a coach these days. I hate the Stillers, that is true. I just know what Tomlin is now.

I couldn’t agree more! We don’t always see eye to eye about the Cardinals, but we would have a blast watching the Stillers lose lol.

There are some, but the ratio of defensive coaches and culture builders to offensive playcallers is pretty low.

I'd really like to know the guys who would rather have Gannon than the names above him for the Cards right now.
I'd take Gannon over Vrabel, MacDonald no question, and probably over Bowles too.

I think I would back coaches who have coached their teams to playoff appearances before those who haven't. Gannon's claim to fame to this point is winning 8 games in a season. I understand circumstances but Seahawks and Titans and Bucs are not traditional powerhouse franchises either.

I tend to favor "Process"... because a good process usually produces results. Right now im really excited about JG due to that...and while it has yet to show results in the w/l column... we all saw what he had to work with.
Now that we have added some talent on defense we get to see if the process and all the extra effort it produces start to bear fruit... I think our biggest hurdle right now is Drew Petzings learning curve. The guy is just like Kyler.... he shows moments of brilliance...but then suddenly his head is so far up his ass he cant see whats on the field.
I find it interesting that after two years of trying to keep Kyler on schedule and rhythm,...suddenly the off season talk is all about making the most of his off schedule abilities.
seems to be a reboot in philosophy offensively..but may also be a last gasp effort to help Drew show some success... IMO dude is on the hot seat this season.

with that in mind I would keep my eyes on Indianapolis. Many around here wanted Shane Steichen when he was interviewing for a HC position ..he was the next hot young offensive mind....and he has a close history with JG.

Posts like this are never going to please anyone, and I think it's largely correct, but I think there's some personal bias in a few choices.

Nick Sirianni is the obvious one. He has a 48-20 record, an NFC championship and a super bowl in 4 years. Yes, he has the help of a very good GM, but he's also had some pretty high player and staff turnover and still won a superbowl.

Pete Carroll - You say "He's 50 games above .500" like it's a bad thing. 50 games! He's a HOF coach. One of the best of the last 15 years. And is easily better than everyone from 3-7. Look at Russ with and without him.

DeMeco Ryans - As coaches I don't think there's anything between Ryans and JG. Texans have played in a bad NFC South, especially last year, while Gannon has had to face 3 of the best teams in the NFC. If roles are reversed I think the results are reversed.

Mike McDaniel - McDaniel is 28-23 and made the playoffs once with a team that pushed a lot of chips in to be great. I think he's a very good OC. He's an average HC and I think very much on the hot seat this year.

The pre fired list outside of Schotty are all guys that don't have a QB.
