Something funky is going on with Augusta's minor-league baseball team.
The Augusta GreenJackets, the low-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, announced its newest alternate identity on Monday by unveiling the new logo and uniforms for the Augusta Soul.
The team will don the temporary uniforms June 19 and 20 when the Soul plays host at North Augusta's SRP Park to the Hill City Howlers, the Lynchburg, Virginia, low-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.
The Soul identity pays tribute to world-famous rhythm-and-blues singers, and Augusta-area natives, James Brown and Sharon Jones.
"That's what makes the Augusta Soul special," said Catie Graf, the GreenJackets' director of marketing, at Monday's announcement. "It is music, but also more than that. It is the pride. It is movement, it is resilience, and it is creativity. It's the feeling of a community with a rhythm all on its own."
Team officials premiered the new look in downtown Augusta at The Soul Bar, a nightspot opened in 1995 as a tribute to Brown, the Godfather of Soul. Player-worn game jerseys will be auctioned later this summer to raise money for the James Brown Academy of Musik.
Alternate uniforms on all levels of professional baseball have been credited with increasing fan engagement. Teams in the past several years have adopted temporary unis, colors, and logos to highlight their home cities' cultures or special occasions.
Force play: Take a look as GreenJackets hold Star Wars night, fall to Cannon Ballers
The GreenJackets worked with local artist Jason Craig to ensure that the new look captures a distinctive style.
"When we began developing this brand, we wanted it to be more than a logo or a jersey. We want it to be authentic to this community and rooted in the story that already belongs in Augusta," Graf said. "And that story is soul."
