The Buffalo Bills are going gray for the first time in franchise history.

The team unveiled its new "Nickel City" alternate uniforms Monday, featuring an all-gray jersey and pants combination paired with a striking new royal blue "Charge" helmet inspired by Buffalo's industrial roots and blue-collar identity.

The design pays tribute to the strength, grit and authenticity of Western New York, drawing inspiration from the Buffalo Nickel, steel mills, grain elevators and rail yards that helped shape the region. The Bills also said the uniforms honor the blue-collar workers who helped build the team's new Highmark Stadium.

"Since this is essentially an alternate 'color rush' designation, we must use a secondary base color that already exists in our color palette," Bills director of design Aaron La Porta said. "Gray was the one brand color we've never leaned into, so this was a fun challenge."

The project took eight months from concept to completion and included fabric selection, helmet paint finishes and television broadcast testing before arriving at the final design.

The Bills published a photo gallery and information page of players modeling the new "Nickel City" uniforms, offering detailed looks at the jersey, helmet and design elements from multiple angles.

"It's a bold new helmet to represent a bold new era in Buffalo Bills football," La Porta said.

What inspired the Bills' new 'Nickel City' alternate uniforms?

Buffalo's "Nickel City" nickname dates to the city's role as a manufacturing hub, making it a natural theme for a uniform rooted in the region's industrial past.

The all-gray color scheme is inspired by the Buffalo Nickel while also representing the steel mills, grain elevators and rail yards that helped build Western New York. Because NFL rules require alternate uniforms to use colors already within a team's existing palette, gray became the natural choice after never previously serving as the primary uniform color.

Beyond the gray foundation, nearly every design element carries a meaning.

The blue collar pays tribute to the blue-collar workers who represent Buffalo's work ethic and authenticity, while a charging buffalo logo sits over the left chest near the heart as a nod to the pride shown by generations of Bills players and fans.

Inside the collar, players will also find a simple message: "GO BILLS."

"We worked very hard to ensure we continue to push the Buffalo Bills brand to new heights and reach more fans, both young and old, while still honoring the team and region's rich history and legacy," La Porta said.

What is the Bills' new 'Charge' helmet?

The centerpiece of the new alternate uniform is the Bills' royal blue "Charge" helmet.

Rather than simply placing the familiar Charging Buffalo logo on the side, the design magnifies the logo itself.

The white horn wraps around the front of the helmet while the iconic red charge streak extends across the top and toward the back, creating the appearance of motion. The metallic blue shell features a metallic flake finish with additional blue accents that the Bills say represent energy, strength and attack.

From behind, the concept becomes even more apparent. The red stripe narrows as it reaches the back bumper, giving the impression that the charging buffalo continues across the entire helmet instead of ending at the logo.

The Bills describe the design as bringing the Charging Buffalo "to life."

Which games will the Bills wear the new alternate uniforms in 2026?

The Bills have not yet announced which games will feature the new "Nickel City" uniforms.

Buffalo is expected to wear the alternate uniforms twice during the 2026 season, and NFL rules permit teams to wear alternate uniforms at both home and road games.

The team is expected to announce the uniform schedule closer to the start of the regular season.
