Auburn baseball continued its dominance on Saturday by defeating Winthrop twice to sweep another weekend series and to build more confidence ahead of next weekend's SEC opener.
Auburn baseball took game one of the doubleheader, 6-0, and game two, 8-1, to complete the series sweep of Winthrop on Saturday. The Tigers got the job done by being attentive in all aspects of the game: pitchers struck out 19 batters while allowing only 11 hits, batters logged 14 runs on 21 hits, and fielders committed zero errors in 75 fielding chances.
Auburn head coach Butch Thompson was pleased with his team's efforts on Saturday despite the challenges of playing a doubleheader and having to battle a rain delay.
“Our team was present,” Thompson said postgame. “I talked about confidence this weekend, because I knew (Winthrop) was going to be confident coming in. Today, I talked about, ‘Can you be present? Be able to focus for a period of time? Be able to think about game one first, and then game two, and then a rain delay?’ These are all good lessons for us if we continue to do our jobs and commit to whatever we put before them,” Thompson added. “I thought they did a nice job of respecting the game and being mentally tough today. They did great at that.”
Jackson Sanders picked up where Jake Marciano left off by striking out 10 batters in Auburn's 6-0 win over Winthrop in game one of the doubleheader. His shutout effort lasted seven innings, where he allowed one walk and two hits. Drew Whalen preserved the shutout by allowing just one hit in two innings of relief.
After Sanders retired the side in order in the 1st inning, two of which were strikeouts, Auburn's bats gifted him with a three-run cushion. Chase Fralick grounded out to score Bristol Carter to put Auburn ahead, 1-0, and Eric Guevara doubled the lead with an RBI single. Todd Clay recorded the biggest score of the inning when he doubled home Guevara for his first hit and RBI of the season.
Rembert led the bats with three hits while eight Auburn batters recorded at least one hit in the game.
Winthrop scored its first and only run of the weekend in the 3rd inning of the backend of Saturday's doubleheader, but it was not enough to stun the Tigers for an upset. Auburn scored five of its eight runs in the final two frames of the game to secure the 8-1 win.
Mason McCraine recorded two hits and five RBI in the game, while true freshman Taylor Belza slugged his first career home run in the win. Auburn used four pitchers in the game, with Christian Chatterton recording the win in relief after striking out three batters and allowing three hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Alex Petrovic struck out two batters and allowed a run on two hits in his start.
Auburn baseball concludes its nine-game homestand on Tuesday by hosting UAB for a midweek clash. The Tigers will then travel to Missouri to open SEC play beginning Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
