Auburn baseball snapped its midweek woes Tuesday by earning a 6-2 win over Samford at Plainsman Park in Auburn.

Auburn baseball got another strong outing from midweek starter Andreas Alvarez, who struck out eight batters while allowing three hits and two walks over five innings of work. Also, for the first time this season, his performance led to a win on the mound.

Alvarez was determined to pitch five innings in Tuesday's game, but found himself with a high pitch count early on. He used a conversation with pitching coach Everett Teaford and development coach Scott Foxhall to fuel the rest of his outing that saw him retire eight of his final nine batters faced.

“It was kind of a struggle, and then we met as a staff, me (Everett Teaford) and (Scott Foxhall),” Alvarez said postgame. “It was just what adjustments can we make to get back in the zone. I had my pitch count up early through three, and I was just like I have to get through five. So just being able to bear down and get back in the zone really helped me out a lot.”

Alvarez faced six batters over the 4th and 5th innings, with the lone baserunner reaching via an error. In those frames, he recorded two strikeouts and relied on his defense to field ground balls. Auburn head coach Butch Thompson was pleased with what he saw out of Alvarez, especially in those final two innings.

“The fourth and fifth (innings) are my two favorite innings he’s thrown in a long time,” Thompson said. “The ball got down and it was fastball, slider. It wasn’t just one pitch. It was strike one, strike two, just finally found that rhythm.”

Alvarez extended his streak of striking out at least seven batters to three games this season, with two of those games resulting in eight strikeouts. He also allowed a season-low three hits and shut out his opposition for the first time all season. At the plate, Chase Fralick led the charge with two hits, while all but two batters recorded at least one hit. Eric Guevara recorded two RBI in the game on a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning and a solo home run in the 3rd inning.

Auburn's homestand continues this weekend when the Tigers host Winthrop for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
