If Harris II landed on the injured list, the Braves would take a big hit.

When asked about an update on Michael Harris II’s back discomfort injury on Friday, Atlanta Braves manager Walt Weiss gave an answer some may have not been expecting.

Weiss said there is a possibility that Harris II could eventually land on the injured list soon, but is still hopeful that he can contribute in a role over the next few days.

Harris II had been removed from Tuesday night’s game that was eventually postponed. After a first inning single, the Braves pulled him in the top of the second due to lower back tightness and he has yet to see the field since then, sitting out Friday's game as well.

On Thursday, Harris II said he felt better than expected on Wednesday. With another game rained out Thursday, the Braves hoped a given off-day could give the outfielder the rest he needed to be good to go on Friday.

Harris II has already dealt with back issues this month. His back tightened up on him on June 5th, made a pinch-hit appearance on June 7th, then returned to the lineup regularly on June 9th.

The 25-year-old will continue to get treatment and was expected to be available off the bench against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night, but did not appear in the game. If the Braves feel the need to continue sitting Harris II in the case that he does not progress from his injury in the coming days, he will likely get placed on the injured list.

Though Atlanta recently reinstated Drake Baldwin from the injured list, losing Harris II in the lineup could be detrimental as the team would be down their two top outfielders. Star right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. was placed on the injured list for the second time this season on June 10th, once again dealing with his left hamstring.

Now in his fifth season, Harris II’s bat continues to be one of the Braves’ most consistent. His .306 batting average would be a season-high, continuously getting on base at an exceptional rate. He has also been slugging at a high level with a .514 clip and 14 home runs.

In the short term since his absence, Mauricio Dubón has started in place of Harris II in center field. Eli White also spent some brief time there on Wednesday.

The Braves can only hope for the best from one of their most productive hitters and that he returns sooner rather than later. But with his back already bothering him earlier this month, the severity of the injury remains unclear.
