Ya, probably a bit of that, some doubling down on his competition approach, and throwing down the gauntlet for anyone else who wants to jump ship: If you leave, its going to look like you are a whiney ass who can't handle competition.

It’s gotta be tough for these coaches to see these leave and have to be gracious. I know it hurts when one of my employees decides to go elsewhere.
Willie Bloomquist had a kid transfer out last year and he wasn’t particularly gracious about it lol.
As if coaching wasn’t hard enough, this portal stuff ups the difficulty factor

Don’t worry. If ASU is starting Sims that means everything has gone off the rails. Leavitt and Bourget are QB1 and QB2

Ya, I think the idea is to build competition. I would be surprised if they found someone who became QB1, but who knows. Here are some others being reported as possibilities:
