Astros acquire 26-year-old infielder from Rays in trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays quietly made a trade on Wednesday afternoon involving a 26-year-old infielder.
According to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart, the Astros have acquired second and third baseman Raynel Delgado from the Rays in exchange for cash.
Delgado is a former sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Guardians in 2018. He is yet to make his Major League debut but has reached as high as Triple-A in the Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, and Toronto Blue Jays' systems.
In 2025 with the Brewers Triple-A club, Delgado hit .281/.363/.378 with five home runs and 53 RBIs while stealing 40 bases in 48 attempts.
"Delgado is more of a second/third base type than a true shortstop, but he has more than 500 minor league innings at all three positions," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote Wednesday. "The Astros have lost depth infielders Braden Shewmake and Nick Allen to the injured list over the last couple weeks."

For now, Delgado is an option for the Astros if they lose additional infield depth to the injured list.
Speed is a strong facet of his game, as he followed last season's 40 stolen base performance with 24 swiped bags in 32 attempts in 61 games this year at Triple-A Durham with the Rays.
