PITTSBURGH – Welcome to the team, Braden Shewmake. Here's Paul Skenes.

That was effectively the message from manager Pat Murphy to Shewmake after the Milwaukee Brewers acquired him from the Houston Astros for cash July 12.

Shewmake provides the Brewers with another true infield option for the time being with David Hamilton on the injured list with a left hamstring ailment. Greg Jones, an outfielder by trade but forced into becoming the Brewers' only backup infielder for the past week, was designated for assignment.

Minor-leaguer Jett Williams would likely have been called up for his MLB debut this week to take Hamilton's spot but is dealing with a minor wrist injury, Murphy said July 12.

Shewmake, a former first round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2019, is batting .256 with a .695 OPS in 83 plate appearances this year. He's shown a bit of power, slugging three homers, but has only drawn two walks. Across 61 career games, Shewmake is a .192 hitter with a .519 OPS.

He was designated for assignment by Houston July 10.

"It's nice, a left-handed hitting infielder to replace Hamilton," Murphy said. "Jones is a great kid. He didn't play a lot of infield. [Shewmake] has got experience, runs, hits for contact."

Hamilton's hamstring injury isn't considered severe but the Brewers are treating it with caution. He will continue rehabbing back home in Houston over the All-Star break beginning July 13 and won't be back after a minimum 10-day stay on the IL.

"We just got to be careful with the hamstring that first time," Murphy said. "We'll see where he's at. We're probably talking a couple series after that."

Shewmake found himself in the lineup playing third and batting ninth against Skenes hours after arriving in Pittsburgh.
