A women’s lacrosse game between Arizona State and Florida was sent abuzz due to a swarm of bees on the field. The matchup in Tempe, which was set to kick off Big 12 lacrosse play, has instead been postponed by one day as a result of the hive.
Several people were stung and were tended to by personnel from the Tempe Fire Department, via NBC 12 News. The extent of the injuries is unclear.
“Due to bees our game has been DELAYED,” the school wrote on social media, about an hour and a half after the game began.
Hours after the delay, both Arizona State and Florida put out statements about the postponement, with the Sun Devils citing “bee swarms at the stadium” and the Gators citing “a bee infestation at the field.”
The game will instead be played at 10 a.m. MT on Sunday, with ASU saying that tickets from Saturday’s game will be honored. Officials initially tried to delay the game until Saturday evening, before postponing it a day, per the Gainesville Sun.
The delay comes for a pretty significant matchup in Big 12 play. Florida, which competes in the Big 12 in women’s lacrosse rather than the SEC, is No. 12 in the NCAA standings, and are tied for No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. Arizona State, while currently unranked, competed against the Gators last year in the 2025 Big 12 championship, though Florida came out on top.
