After a shaky start (CJ fumbles, drops, ST penalties, missed assignments in coverage, poor attempts to tackle)...a nifty tip interception by Dansby to Mathieu gave the Cardinals quite a lift and momentum when Carson Palmer dropped a perfect pass at the pylon to John Brown. That was the night for Palmer, but the defense came up big when Markus Golden sacked and stripped Matt Schaub and Chandler Jones pounced on the ball. Then John Brown hauled in another TD pass thrown on a dime, this time by Drew Stanton.

The highlight of the second half included sacks from Cap Capi, some good strikes to WRs and TEs by Blaine Gabbert and a bounce out race to the pylon for a TD by James Summers.

This was a very positive response to last week's sluggish loss to the Bears.

Updated 53:

QB (3): Palmer, Gabbert, Stanton

* All 3 QBs played well.

RB (4): D. Johnson, K. Williams, C. Johnson, Ellington

* Chance are BA will remain confident in CJ, who hasn't looked himself in the past two games. Ellington remains a good receiving threat. Penny's fumble hurt his cause. The Cardinals could make a waiver claim for one of these spots, preferably a good all-around RB who can play STs.

WR (6): Fitzgerald, Jaron Brown, Nelson, John Brown, C. Williams, Golden

* Brittan Golden was featured early and was the starting kickoff returner --- looks like he's the #6. Chad Williams had a poor game with a drop and a fumble, which is tough because Jeremy Ross could bring value to the team, as could Aaron Dobson who has a nice combination of size and speed. Curiously, last week's standout, Chris Hubert wasn't targeted until Trevor Knight came into the game with 4 minutes left. Carlos Agudosi has a nice 20 yard catch from Gabbert. J.J. Nelson has a very good catch on a 3rd down out route despite tight coverage.

TE (3): Gresham, Niklas, Momah

* All three are playing solid. Hakeem Valles plays a lot on STs, but should start the year on the PS, as could Ricky Seals-Jones who made another catch on the last TD drive to move the chains on 3rd down.

OL (9): Humphries, Iupati, Shipley, Boehm, Veldheer, Wetzel, Toner, D. Johnson, Holden

* Cases can be made for T Ulrich John and G/C Tony Bergstrom, but it's tough to cut draft picks.

DL (7): Rucker, Peters, Mauro, Nkemdiche, Gunter, Pierre, X. Williams

* Gunter had his best game in the pre-season, as did Xavier Williams. #79 David Maola had a very good second half.

ILB (5): Dansby, Bucannon, Reddick, Bynes, Wheeler

* Josh Bynes and Philip Wheeler were the 2nd team ILBers and they both were aggressive and around the ball. Scooby Wright, as good as he is on STs, may be headed to the PS. If Deone Bucannon can play week 1, the Cardinals could elect to go with just 4 ILBers in favor of keeping an extra WR or DB.

OLB (4): Golden, C. Jones, Martin, Capi

* Cao Capi was outstanding in this game. Kareem Martin was solid too.

CB (4): Peterson, Bethel, B. Williams, T. Williams

* Another good game for Bethel and Brandon Williams.

S (5): Mathieu, Bethea, Branch, Baker, Miller

* Rudy Ford didn't play until late, but made a couple of good plays, one being a good tackle on Leone's last punt. But, Harlan Miller almost intercepted a pass and is playing fairly well as a backup FS. Would not like to see Ford get waived. He is going to be a good player in a year or two. Maybe they keep Ford and waive Wheeler.

STs (3): Brewer, Dawson, Wile.

* Dawson looks very good.

I would like to see the 53 man roster expanded to 58 or so. Don't care about the cents on the dollar earned it will cost the owners. I think the quality of the product improves as teams get to keep and continue to develop youngins in case of injury and the eventual retirement of players.

For the Cards two more Olineman, another CB, DL, WR or RB. See how quickly those 5 extra spots get filled up.

Wile looks like the reincarnation of Drew Butler. There HAS to be a better option out there someplace.

Mitch, like Bert said, thanks for a great job. Just to nitpick. You have us keeping D. Johnson and Holden since it's hard to cut draft picks, even though they haven't shown much. Yet you think we'll cut Ford, who, though hurt for a chunk of TC, has flashed at times. Since John was injured, though, not sure how seriously, keeping Holden might make sense. My hope is that Ford makes the team over Miller. As for CJ2K, the Denver game will be important for both him and Penny. And while he hasn't had many carries in the PS games, it would be some surprise if Summers made the team. Make that, a major surprise. Still like Ross over Golden.

You and I are on the same page, Garth. I would not cut Rudy Ford and I think Jeremy Ross is one of the top 5 WRs on the roster, let alone #6. So while we are at it...here's my preferred 53:

QB (3): Palmer, Gabbert, Stanton
RB (4): D. Johnson, K. Williams, TBD, TBD (I am not sold on CJ or Ellington and think we could upgrade the RB position and STs through waiver claims. One guy I like a lot is D.J. Foster (ASU, Pats) -- very versatile and can return kicks.
WR (7): Fitzgerald, John Brown, Jaron Brown, Nelson, Ross, Dobson (legit deep threat, too bad he's been hurt, but he's back now), C. Williams
TE (3): Gresham, Niklas, Momah
OL (9): Humphries, Iupati, Shipley, Boehn, Veldheer, Wetzel, Toner, Dorian Johnson, Holden
DL (7): Rucker, Peters, Mauro, Nkemdiche, Gunter, Pierre, X. Williams
LB (8): Bucannon, Dansby, Reddick, Bynes, Golden, Jones, Martin, Capi
CB (4): Peterson, Bethel, B. Williams, Ford (CB/S/STs)
S (5): Mathieu, Branch, Bethea, Baker, Miller (CB/S/STs)
ST (3): Brewer, Dawson, Wile

What do you think?

tj logan has a chance to return or he is out for the season?

He's on the IR...with a chance to return by week 9, if he's one of two players the Cardinals can re-activate off the IR.

He's definitely better than butler. I don't think butler ever kicked it 50 plus yards. Wile at least does that half the times he punts. With that said I tend to agree there probably is someone better available. But I doubt the cards even look because of the importance of familiarity of the holder nonsense.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was close to this, although I think:

Wright makes it based on ST, but over whom? Probably a WR, C Williams should really be on the PS instead, so I'll pick Dobson to be cut.
I think John (depending on the ankle) makes it over Holden or D Johnson, with the outsider going PS.
I think the RBs are set, ignoring anything BA says after the game.

What do you think?

I agree with you on the running backs. It seems like almost every team has more depth at the position than the cards. I would think someone better than CJ will be available on the wire, and running back is the one position that is almost completely plug and play.

I know superior backs to penny will be available, so we should at least look on the wire for our practice squad. I know Ellington is staying though, ba wants him for 2 back passing sets.

I am not nearly as high on our WRs as you. Fitz, the two browns and Nelson are the only ones I think should truly make a good team. I would not hesitate to cut golden or Ross as I have a feeling better will be available in the cuts.

I really wish they would cut holden or Dorian Johnson also. Most likely they would make it through waivers, and if they don't so what. Bergstrom and john are better anyways. Young projects are a dime a dozen, we should not get hung up on the fact we drafted them.

With our higher than usual waiver claim position I would cut CJ, Harlan miller, one of the ol, both punters, and maybe x Williams and golden and look for another tight end, running back, wr, dl, punter and return man. I'm sure upgrades at all those positions won't be available but several will be, and odds are we will be able to get the guys we cut back anyway, because they aren't that good.

The run blocking still looks like a major concern. That lateral style of run play just wasn't working with the group they had in there. Every time the OL started moving laterally, the Falcons ran right through it. Wetzel and Toner got abused. I don't know if Iupati would have fixed that. I think they're going to need to rethink the way they run block - unless the problem has more to do with vanilla scheme.

Other than the OL, everything looked sharp - at least in the first half that I watched. It was great to see John Brown looking healthy. If they can feel confident with him staying healthy, I think that would free up a roster spot.

How great is Phil Dawson? That first 50+ field goal, he just looked so calm and in control of that kick. It looked like an extra point to him.

Yeah wetzel looked bad last night. I think he is better at tackle than guard. I am worried about veldheer also, he has not looked good, humphries stinks on some plays too. I was really expecting better out of our ol than what they have shown.

I am also still very worried about stopping the run. We just aren't getting good enough dl play, very little penetration. I feel like Atlanta could have run every play and marched right down the field if they had wanted too. I know nkemdiche will help, but I think it is going to be a problem all year.

We need to keep cap capi, according to pff he has been our best player all preseason, and that matches what I have seen, he is a terror on the edge.

Reddick looked improved last night. Made some good play on runs and passes.

All 3 QB's looked good. DS started out fast and reverted to his normal self. BG started out slow being under pressure. With a little protection he make the throws and put it right on the money.

Disappointed in CJohnson with the way he was handling the ball. After the fumble he did start to run better.

Toner got beat a few times.

Chad really needs to step up his game. If he can't catch the ball then he won't have a role.

ST penalties are not supposed to happen. Kickoff offsides, high school teams don't do that. Return blocking was weak at times. Amos has work to do. Problem is he has never been able to make the right adjustments. Will ST's cost us a game this year?

I think Bynes and Wheeler are battling for a spot and Scooby is the 5th ILB for ST purposes. We always grab a guy or two off the wire after cuts, so there is a surprise coming somewhere (TE, LB and secondary seem the most likely candidates.. though DJ Foster is an intriguing name you threw out for his return ability)

Better yet, Wile gets air under his punts. When Butler did kick one 50 yards, it was so low that it didn't allow the coverage team to set up allowing for big returns. Last night the Falcons had 7 return yards on 4 punts. I'll take that all day long. Oh, and I think Stanton played himself back into the #2 spot. He actually looked good and his hard counts were nice.

Oh sure he did, every time he punted from our 49 yard line. :clapping:

Mitch, thank you for doing these write-ups. It is a big pleasure to read them.

I think it is fun to speculate about various trade scenarios, and even though these probably will not be happening, I thought I would post them.

My thinking is that wide receiver, defensive line and edge rusher are the most vulnerable spots on the roster. I have only included so-called big names though I know it is more likely Keim will add relatively unknown players if any at all. It's just that I think it is almost impossible to guess who those players are. Also, all three of my mentions are supposedly release candidates.

Wide receiver, Phillip Dorsett, Indianapolis Colts.

This is mostly relevant if there is any doubt at all about John Brown, as Dorsett is that type of receiver.

Dorsett reportedly is on the trade block. He was a first round pick only two years ago but he has not been able to impress enough, and with players such as T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief on the team, it seems doubtful that Dorsett will get a big role this year.

Bruce Arians and some of the other coaches obviously has links to the Colts, and in my opinion Dorsett could easily be another one of those low risk-high reward type guys that Keim prides himself in finding.

Defensive lineman, Sheldon Richardson, New York Jets.

Now, this idea is based on the fact that there is some concern with the injuries to Robert Nkemdiche and Olsen Pierre. I do not know if there is these concerns.

Their have been reports for years that Richardson is on the trade block, and since the Jets seems to be having a fire sale this offseason, I could see him finally getting moved. He might be a bit controversial as a person but he is also a great player.

If Keim, Arians or any other of the coaches has any questions about Richardson they should be able to easily get all of them answered by Todd Bowles.

Edge rusher, Brooks Reed, Atlanta Falcons.

Well, this is only based on rumors and speculations from some of their fans. I have not seen any report that Reed could be on the trading block. The thinking by the fans is that Reed was acquired on a huge contract some years ago but he has not lived up to it. This year the Falcons drafted another edge rusher in the first round of the draft, and since the Falcons already have the league leader in sacks, they do not think it is worth keeping Reed around. Now, that contract could serve as an argument against trading for him but it could easily be replaced by a new deal.

Reed was a former second round pick out of Arizona. He is a edge defender in the mold of Jarvis Jones, and if Jones is unable to play this season, I believe they could basically get the same production from Reed. Kareem Martin is one of the players I have been most exited about in training camp this year but obviously they need at least one more edge defender. Also, they did put in a waiver claim for edge rusher Kony Ealy.

Excellent suggestions Gandhi!

You're right, Dorsett is BA's kind of WR. Not sure why the Colts would want to trade him. Do you know why?

Been wondering about Sheldon Richardson all off-season and whether Steve Keim would make a move to acquire him. Might be a bit of a head case. Plus, the Jets' price for Richardson in a trade might be too steep. But one can imagine fellow Mizzou Tiger Markus Golden would be thrilled to have Richardson on the Cardinals. Blaine Gabbert too.

I don't think we need Brooks Reed because behind Golden and Chandler Jones, Kareem Martin and Cap Capi have had excellent pre-seasons. Not sure what the Cardinals are going to do with Jarvis Jones. If they place him on IR, he would have 8-9 weeks to get healthy and strong and could help down the stretch, if they wanted to make him one of the 2 players they can bring back from the IR. T.J. Logan is one they are hoping to bring back.

They have T.Y Hilton and Donte Moncrief as their starters. Kamar Aiken and two of their very inexperienced guys are pushing to surpass Dorsett on the depth chart, and supposedly this is very much a make-or-break year for Dorsett. The thinking by some fans, and maybe the reason the rumor was reported, is that his stock might very well continue to slide to the point where he has no tradevalue. That might actually already be the case.

Well, I did not get to see the game against the Falcons where Capi sort of had a little breakthrough. Would you be comfortable with him playing during the regular season? I mean, I know that he would be far down the depth chart but he would most likely still play important snaps. I guess there most be a reason why they tried to claim Kony Ealy off waivers just the other day. Also, I have been extremely pleased with the progress of Kareem Martin this offseason since he could easily be a very important piece to the defense this year. What is your take on him? I am not saying he will be a star or anything but I have no problem with him being the primary backup to Chandler Jones and Golden.
