Mike Evans' decision to sign with the San Francisco 49ers was one of the most surprising of the free agency period after he spent his first 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And after his injury-riddled 2025 campaign that ended his 11-season streak of 1,000 receiving yards, many questioned why the 49ers would want to add an aging veteran to their team.
Well, Yahoo Sports' Matt Harmon has a pretty good idea why. In a conversation with James Koh during an episode of his "Reception Perception" show, Harmon explained that Evans can do exactly what Brandon Aiyuk did (and excelled at) during the 2023 season. He added that Evans is the perfect fit for an X receiver in Kyle Shanahan's offense, one that they've lacked since Aiyuk tore his ACL during the 2024 season.
"The Shanahan X receiver runs a bunch of digs and slants and out routes," Harmon said. "And look at Mike Evans's route tree from last year. Those are his best routes.
"This offense is at its best objectively when it has an X receiver kicking ass. And Mike Evans is that guy. That's why I do love the fit with him there in addition to what it's going to do for Ricky Pearsall … because the route tree is just like picture perfect for what Mike Evans still does really well on those in-breakers, especially the digs and the slants, that's why I think it makes a lot of sense for him landing with this team."
Evans, alongside Pearsall and Christian Kirk, gives 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy a very stable floor at the receiver position — one that he lacked in the past two seasons. Evans may not be the same dynamic receiver he was earlier in his career, but he's still a great contested catch receiver who can exploit defensive mismatches and score touchdowns.
There's a clear reason why this marriage came to be, too. As Harmon pointed out, Evans fits the Shanahan system like a glove, which had to be a part of the team's pitch to the veteran this offseason. Evans will have a clearly defined role in San Francisco, and one where he will undoubtedly be the unquestioned No. 1 receiver option for Purdy.
