Jan. 28—MITCHELL — The Mitchell Kernel volleyball program will be going from one accomplished coach to another in 2026, as the school has announced Amy Tyler will lead the program.
Tyler was announced as the program's second head coach all-time on Wednesday, replacing Deb Thill after Thill announced her retirement in January after 35 years. Tyler was an assistant volleyball coach with Thill for three seasons from 2020 to 2022. The hire is pending Mitchell Board of Education approval.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to return to coaching after a three-year absence," Tyler said in a news release. "The gym has always felt like a second home to me, and the opportunity to mentor and support young women is a responsibility I value greatly. I am enthusiastic about learning from the current coaching staff, collaborating within a positive environment, and contributing our combined experiences and commitment to what I believe will be a successful run."
Tyler previously coached for 16 years leading the Wagner program, which included a pair of Class A state championships in 2008 and 2009. She has a career coaching record of 433-93, and is one of four coaches in South Dakota volleyball history with at least 400 wins and a career winning percentage of .800 or better.
In addition to her past experience at MHS with volleyball, she has also been an assistant coach for the Kernel track and field programs since 2020.
"She brings instant credibility through her previous experience and proven success," MHS Activities Director Cory Aadland said. "More importantly, her ability to lead and build meaningful relationships is unmatched. I have personally witnessed her impact both as a teacher in the classroom and as a coach working with our student-athletes. She has an incredible passion for young people, and I am excited for the future of Mitchell Kernel Volleyball under her leadership."
Mitchell volleyball was 16-11 in 2025 and reached the Class AA state tournament for the first time since 2018.
