Willson Contreras is staying in Boston.

The All-Star first baseman, who will compete in his fourth career All-Star Game on July 14 in Philadelphia, toldreporters that he informed the Red Sox he won’t be willing to waive his no-trade clause this summer. The MLB trade deadline is Aug. 3.

The odds of the Red Sox moving Contreras have diminished as Boston has inched closer to a playoff position in a relatively weak American League.

Seven teams are within 3.5 games of each other for the third and final Wild Card berth in the AL. The Red Sox (46-48) are a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners (48-49) and Minnesota Twins (48-49) for the final spot.

Considering the lofty expectations following the team, Boston would be unwise to deal its best power hitter. Contreras has 20 home runs, 61 RBIs, and a .285/.379/.542 slash line at the break.

In 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Red Sox, Contreras has 192 home runs, 609 RBIs, and a .260/.354/.466 slash line.

Contreras’ five-year, $87.5 million contract through 2027 includes a $17.5 million team option for 2028 or a $5 million buyout. He loses full no-trade protection after this season.

More to come on this story.
