Red Sox All-Star Willson Contreras reveals plan with no-trade clause originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox were not having a good 2026 season for much of the year. There were legitimate concerns this team would blow it up at the trade deadline and reset.
But, following a nine-game winning streak heading into the All-Star break, things are looking very promising now. And for Willson Contreras, it likely made his decision a lot easier.
With his no-trade clause and his name in plenty of rumors this summer already ahead of the deadline, Contreras revealed to reporters, including Chris Cotillo of MassLive, that he's made his decision, that he has no plans to waive his no-trade clause, and he wants to finish his MLB career in Boston.
Willson Contreras won't waive no-trade clause, want's to end MLB career in Boston
"Willson Contreras said he went to the Red Sox and told them he would not be willing to waive his no-trade clause," Cotillo reports. "He wants to finish his career in Boston. Joked that he got out ahead of potential rumors by making his stance clear."
While the trade rumors about Contreras have already begun, he just put a stop to them by making it clear that he has no intention of waiving his no-trade clause.
He has full control over whether he's traded or not, and this update from Cotillo clears the air: Contreras is going nowhere this season, and likely for a while.
The 34-year-old slugger, who just put on a show during the Home Run Derby, setting the tone in Round 1 and then playing off the raucous Philadelphia crowd against Kyle Schwarber in Round 2, is sticking in Boston for a while.

He's under contract through the 2027 season and has a 2028 club option. If he has his wish, he will be sticking in Boston for the rest of his career.
Considering how incredible he's been this season, hitting .285 with 20 homers, 89 hits, 3.5 bWAR, 16 doubles, two triples, 46 runs scored, 61 RBIs, and a .921 OPS with a 159 OPS+, the Red Sox should want to keep him for a while.
Conteras has been with the Red Sox for less than a season, but he's already become beloved by the fan base and is having one. of the best seasons of his MLB career.
If this success continues, there's no reason why the Red Sox would want to move on from him, and he clearly wants to stick in Boston as well.
While the future beyond his current deal is unknown, at least for the 2026 trade deadline, it's clear Contreras has no plans of leaving Boston, as he won't be waiving his no-trade clause this summer.
