One of the biggest offseason storylines for NFL fans centers on New England Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez. The standout defender skipped voluntary workouts as he seeks a new contract. Although his rookie deal doesn’t expire until after the 2027 season, his representatives have been pushing for an extension. For now, Gonzalez appears willing to remain patient and is expected to hold in during training camp.

ESPN reported the development, noting that Gonzalez is not expected to participate extensively in training camp. That’s if he participates at all.

“The Patriots hold their first training camp practice July 25, and it’s hard to imagine Gonzalez participating full throttle under his current contract, which calls for him to earn $2.259 million this season. Top cornerbacks make more than $30 million per year, and Gonzalez is eligible for an extension for the first time,” ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported.

Well worth the draft pick

Since entering the league as the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzalez has established himself as one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks. Several members of his draft class, including Jaxon Smith-Njigba, have already signed lucrative extensions after having their fifth-year options exercised.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise Gonzalez’s representatives are seeking not only a timely extension. They are seeking one that places him among the league’s highest-paid cornerbacks. Trent McDuffie currently holds that distinction with an average annual salary of $31 million after signing a contract extension.

While Reiss believes it’s difficult to envision Gonzalez fully participating in training camp, another question naturally follows: How long will his hold-in last? Could it eventually carry into the regular season? That scenario seems unlikely, but it can’t be completely ruled out.

Gonzalez has become a cornerstone of the Patriots’ defense. In head coach Mike Vrabel’s first season, he established himself as the team’s undisputed No. 1 cornerback. Gonzalez routinely took on the opposition’s toughest receiving threats. His performance played a key role in helping New England reach the Super Bowl.

Now, the Patriots must decide whether to reward one of their franchise cornerstones with a long-term extension sooner rather than later.
