Christian Gonzalez isn't only a silent assassin on the football field. That moniker carries over into the business realm as well.
The New England Patriots' star cornerback has worked out away from the team during voluntary organized team activities, which has left outsiders to speculate that it's contract-related. Gonzalez has participated in OTAs in the past, but his latest absence coincides with his contract being eligible for an extension.
With that said, skipping out on mandatory minicamp would take things to another level. But things aren't expected to get to that point, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss, who also chimed in on wide receiver Kayshon Boutte's minicamp status.
"The presence of cornerback Christian Gonzalez (contract) and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte (trade rumors) are among the Patriots' notable camp storylines," Reiss wrote. "It would be a surprise if Gonzalez didn't report for camp, while Boutte told WBZ-TV reporter Aaron Parseghian that he will be there for Day 1 on Tuesday."
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and said he believed it was a "good chance" that the Patriots and Gonzalez would agree on a contract extension before the season. The timetable remains up in the air, but it appears the two sides are determined to get a deal done.
