The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox made a massive trade at Major League Baseball's trade deadline, sending Adley Rutschman to the Red Sox. Rutschman, among the best catchers in Major League Baseball, is currently dealing with an injury.
Red Sox fans will have to wait a bit to see him on the field, but it makes it all the more exciting to think about how good this team can be when he's good to go.
At the same time, it can't be easy for Rutschman to go from Baltimore to Boston. Not that he isn't excited to be with the Red Sox, but the former first overall pick in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft was selected by the Orioles and spent his entire career with the organization. He sent the fan base a heartwarming message on his Instagram on Friday night.
“Birdland. Thank you for making Baltimore feel like home. The relationships I’ve built, the memories we’ve made, and the support you’ve shown me are things I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.
“From being drafted, to making my debut, to experiencing the postseason, I’m incredibly proud of everything we accomplished together and I’ll always be grateful for the journey and everyone who was a part of it. Thank you to my teammates, the organization, and especially the fans who believed in me and supported me every step of the way. Baltimore will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything.”
It's awesome to see when players really buy into a city they played in, which Rutschman clearly did. It's unfortunate, however, that the Orioles didn't play at the level they were hoping for throughout parts of his career.
When Rutschman came up in 2022 and into 2023, there was an argument to be made that Baltimore was going to be one of the best teams in baseball for a very long time.
Instead, the Red Sox and others have been better than them, and as a result, they just lost arguably their best player.
