The Baltimore Orioles decided to massively shake up their organization by trading Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox. The catcher found out the trade news far away from a baseball diamond.
Instead, he was at the movies with former Orioles teammates Colston Cowser, Ryan Mountcastle and Gunnar Henderson, preparing to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Their movie day was permanently altered by Rutschman being dealt, via Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun.
“It was pretty emotional,” Cowser said. “All I could do was give him a hug and tell him that I’m here for him and I love him.”

The group of four didn’t end up seeing Spider-Man that day. They instead spent time consoling Rutschman and taking in the fact their catcher has been dealt. While it’s clear they all share a close friendship off the field, their time as teammates has ended for now.
For the first five years of his MLB career, Baltimore is all Rutschman has known. He was selected No. 1 overall by the Orioles in 2019 and went on to appear in 572 games for the team. In that time, Rutschman hit .254 with 69 home runs and 277 RBIs. He was named an All-Star three times and took home a Silver Slugger in 2023.
With what the Red Sox paid to get him, Rutschman is now poised to be a central figure in any success they find. Seeing as Boston is planning to go on a deep playoff run, the catcher may find more success in 2026 than he otherwise would’ve in Baltimore. But Rutschman’s time with the Orioles won’t soon become a forgotten memory. And the bonds he has created with his teammates will exist in all realms.
