Aaron Rodgers is officially returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers for another season.
According to NFL Network, the four-time NFL MVP agreed to terms on a one-year contract to remain in Pittsburgh as he enters his 22nd NFL season. The news arrived shortly after Rodgers was spotted in Pittsburgh spending time with teammates Ben Skowronek, Pat Freiermuth, and Mason Rudolph during what quickly became one of the NFL offseason's most heavily analyzed ice cream outings.
Rodgers is now expected to report for Organized Team Activities when the Steelers begin offseason work Monday.
Last year, Rodgers waited until mandatory minicamp before fully arriving during the offseason program. This time, Pittsburgh should have its veteran quarterback available throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamp as preparations begin for another AFC North battle.
There is also speculation that Rodgers strategically waited until after the NFL schedule release before finalizing his return.
Two seasons ago, the NFL heavily featured Rodgers and the New York Jets in primetime following his arrival in New York, only for his season to end immediately due to a torn Achilles tendon. Pittsburgh may have preferred avoiding another overloaded national schedule before Rodgers officially committed.
Financially, the Steelers also positioned themselves carefully.
Pittsburgh reportedly placed the seldom-used right-of-first-refusal tag on Rodgers, according to CBS NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. That mechanism allows the Steelers to match outside offers while also potentially receiving compensatory draft value if Rodgers had signed elsewhere.
Adam Schefter reports that it's a one-year deal worth up to $25 million, with a base salary between $22 and $23 million and up to a few million more in incentives.
On the field, Rodgers still showed plenty of functionality during the 2025 season.
He finished the year throwing for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while completing 65.7 percent of his passes and posting a 94.8 passer rating across 16 games. Pittsburgh finished 10-6 with Rodgers under center and remained firmly in the AFC playoff picture throughout the season. Rodgers also performed well against the Baltimore Ravens, one of Pittsburgh's primary measuring sticks inside the AFC North.
Across two matchups against Baltimore last season, Rodgers threw for 578 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 95.6 passer rating. During the Week 18 showdown for the AFC North title, Rodgers completed 31 of 47 passes for 294 yards while nearly helping Pittsburgh steal the division.
Now the Steelers will attempt one more run with the future Hall of Fame quarterback. For Pittsburgh, the decision reflects both urgency and belief. The AFC remains loaded with elite quarterbacks, and the Steelers clearly believe Rodgers still gives them a legitimate chance to compete deep into January.
