As if Aaron Rodgers needed any more reason to mull over retirement—after dragging the Pittsburgh Steelers through an excruciatingly long waiting game—the NFL just banned his long-preferred helmet model, the Schutt Air XP Pro Q11 LTD.
The NFL, in conjunction with the NFLPA, determined that several outdated helmet designs will no longer be approved for play in 2025 and beyond. Rodgers’ helmet was one of seven newly banned models, joining 29 others already prohibited. The official reasoning for the ban was outlined as follows:
"The following prohibited helmet models perform poorly in laboratory testing, have been discontinued by the manufacturer, or were produced by companies no longer manufacturing football helmets. All the helmets listed below are prohibited for use on-field by NFL players."
Steelers fans might remember that Antonio Brown's helmet drama in 2019 was the catalyst for his eventual implosion with the then-Oakland Raiders—ultimately causing him to never play a snap for the team.
Could Rodgers take a similar, stubborn route? It’s not far-fetched. Reports have indicated that retirement has been on the table all along.
