Aaron Boone's Giancarlo Stanton decision vs. Mariners is unavoidable Yankees reality originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Giancarlo Stanton is scorching hot at the plate.
The New York Yankees designated hitter has opened the season with five consecutive multi-hit games. Strangely, he's finished 2-for-4 in all five games.
However, the Yankees and manager Aaron Boone know that due to his injury history, Stanton needs an off day every once in a while. Wednesday's afternoon contest against the Seattle Mariners will be the 36-year-old's first day of rest of the year.
Ben Rice moves from first base to DH, and Paul Goldschmidt receives his first start of the year against a right-handed pitcher (George Kirby).

You may be asking yourself, why would Boone give Stanton the day off if the Yankees have a travel day tomorrow for Friday's home opener? Well, how often would the slugger get two consecutive days off his feet during the season? Seldom, besides the All-Star break.
Remember, Boone and his coaching staff are very detail-oriented when it comes to lineup construction. General manager Brian Cashman also made it abundantly clear that he has nothing to do with lineup decisions.
It's way too small a sample size for this to matter, but Stanton is 0-for-3 in his career against Kirby. Yankees fans won't like Boone's decision, but the future Hall of Fame candidate played just 77 games in 2025.
The Yankees want Stanton healthy in August and September, and even a player as hot as Stanton needs time to give the body a break.
