The New York Yankees have had a rough go of it with injuries lately and the latest update on Giancarlo Stanton isn’t breaking that trend.
According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Stanton, who is working his way back from a left calf strain, has suffered a setback in his recovery.
Stanton tweaked his calf while running bases as part of his rehab and that could push back his return date, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
“He felt a little something in there a day or two ago, so that’s kind of slowed him down,” he said, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “I expected him back early in this homestand. That’s in jeopardy now.”
Boone went on to note the tweak happened while Stanton was hitting and running at Yankee Stadium and the 36-year-old “just felt a little something in his last one.”

The Yankees slugger has been on the shelf since he suffered the injury on April 24.
Prior to his injury, Stanton was hitting .256 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 24 games.
Of course, injuries are nothing new for Stanton, who has routinely missed significant time while with the Yankees and throughout his career.
In the previous eight seasons with the Yankees, Stanton has missed 50 or more games in five of them, and one of the three he didn’t miss at least that many was the COVID-19 season, which saw Stanton play in 23 of 60 contests.

Stanton’s setback is just the latest injury blow for the Yankees.
Aaron Judge is on the injured list with a stress fracture in his right rib and could miss multiple months as a result.
New York also recently lost Trent Grisham (right hamstring strain) and Austin Wells (cervical headaches) to the injured list.

“No getting around it, we’ve lost some key people,” Boone said. “It’s part of it. The [162-game schedule] is coming for you. I feel like we’re way more equipped to deal with it than we have been in some years. It’s a great opportunity for some of our young players.”
One player getting another opportunity as a result of the injuries is top prospect Jasson Dominguez, who was called up after Grisham was placed on the IL.
